EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC AND ART FOR TWOS (2-2.6 years)
A gradual separation process guides children to independence in a school setting as they explore a diverse repertoire of music and art. Through movement, singing, listening, storytelling, and playing instruments, children experience the joys of music-making with traditional melodies, fingerplays, rhythmic chants, and international folk tunes. Other favorite songs – many composed by Diller-Quaile faculty – guide transitions (such as classroom clean-up) and other playful activities. Small percussion instruments include drums, bells, shakers, and rhythm sticks, as well as less common percussion instruments from around the world. A wide variety of engaging props and toys – including scarves, puppets, hoops, blocks, and puzzles – enrich the program. Through hands-on experiences, children are exposed to a broad range of artistic media and techniques as they create drawings, paintings, collages, clay, and wood sculptures. The classroom environment is artistically stimulating and encourages exploration, interaction, and discovery. In addition to a head music teacher, a head art teacher, and an assistant teacher, every class features a pianist who improvises accompaniments in a variety of musical styles.
