A multi award-winning composer, Ms. Son’s musicals have been performed in the U.S. and across Asia. Born in South Korea and based in New York City, she made history as the first female foreign composer commissioned to write an original musical for Japan’s largest theater company, the Takarazuka Revue—breaking new ground in the company’s more than 100-year history.
In addition to her prolific compositional work, Ms. Son is an accomplished arranger, orchestrator, and pianist–improviser, with unique expertise spanning classical music, musical theater, pop, and jazz standards.
As a dedicated teaching artist, she teaches at the Geneva Conservatory of Music and the Diller-Quaile School of Music, where she inspires a lifelong love of music in children and youth. Ms. Son holds a B.M. in Composition from Ewha Womans University, an M.A. in Composition from NYU, and an M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She also earned an Applied Credential in Dalcroze Eurhythmics from the Lucy Moses School. Ms. Son is a proud alumna of the Tony-honored BMI Lehman Engel Musical Theatre Workshop.
Ms. Son is a firm believer of the vital role of music education in developing the whole child.
