Guitar Program

The School offers a program of guitar study for the early beginner through the advanced high school student, beginning as young as age 4. The typical weekly program for a young student includes a 30-minute Individual Lesson and a Musicianship Class. Older students take lessons of 45 minutes to an hour in length and, as they advance, participate in Guitar Ensemble and Repertoire Class. Students may also enroll in a program of Suzuki guitar study, which includes a weekly Group Class. Both in-person and live remote programs are available for guitar study.

Individual Lesson Program

Students enrolled in Individual Lesson Programs have a weekly comprehensive program of:
· Individual Lesson (30, 45, or 60 minutes)
· Musicianship Class
· Plus Optional Ensembles or Elective Classes

CLASS GUITAR INSTRUCTION FOR BEGINNERS

These small classes provide an introduction to guitar study in an engaging and supportive group setting. Students learn the fundamentals of first-year study, as they explore group and solo playing. Teachers facilitate the transition to individual study. A placement interview is required for admission to the class.

CLASS GUITAR INSTRUCTION FOR BEGINNERS

GUITAR ENSEMBLE

Guitar students explore score reading and ensemble playing in ensembles of two to eight players, which meet weekly throughout the school year. Ensembles study a wide range of repertoire and are shaped according to level. Placement auditions are held in the spring for returning students and during interviews for new students.

Intermediate Guitar Ensemble

This ensemble offers intermediate to advanced classical guitarists the opportunity to play in a full guitar orchestra or ensemble. Students explore ensemble techniques, play intricate classical pieces, and perform as part of a larger group. The class fosters collaboration, musicianship, and the challenge of performing complex arrangements as a cohesive unit.

Application Process

Register
Click the "Apply for the 2025-2026 School Year" button on any program page to begin your application.

Complete the Scheduling Form
Check your email for the Scheduling Form, which will be sent to the address associated with your account.

Placement Interview
If you/your child is new to instrument study at Diller-Quaile, the Department Coordinator will contact you to arrange a placement interview with the Department Head. During the interview, experienced students will perform one of their current pieces, while beginners will have the chance to try an instrument.

Program Planning
After the interview, the Department Head will collaborate with you/your family to develop a personalized program and schedule.
