String Program

Diller-Quaile offers a program of string study for the young beginner through the advanced high school student. Violin, viola, and cello may begin at age four or older and double bass at age seven or older. Beginners of all ages are welcomed on all instruments. Beginning students may enroll in a Core Program of an Individual Lesson and Musicianship Class or a Full Program, which also includes a Suzuki Group Class. The inclusive philosophies of Shinichi Suzuki and the School’s founders, as well as traditional string pedagogies, inform an approach that assures teaching tailored to the needs of the individual student, with a strong emphasis on building confident solo performing, fluent music reading, and skillful ensemble participation. Both in-person and live remote programs are available for string study.

INDIVIDUAL LESSON PROGRAM

Students enrolled in Individual Lesson Programs have a weekly comprehensive program of:

· Individual Lesson (30, 45, or 60 minutes)
· Musicianship Class
· Plus Optional Ensembles or Elective Classes

Suzuki Group Violin Classes

Repertoire Class

Advanced instrumental & voice students focus on the interpretation and performance of compositions from the standard repertoire. Students are coached on solo works and learn from observing the work of their peers. Repertoire classes provide a venue for students to perform each week and to discuss the various stylistic periods, genres, and performance practices relevant to their repertoire.

Applying for Instrument or Voice Study for New or Returning Students

STEPS FOR APPLYING

Step 1: Complete the application and submit the application fee. The most effective way to register is via computer, instead of smartphone. Thank you.

Step 2: Complete the “Scheduling Form” sent to the email tied to your account.

Step 3: If your child is new to instrument study at Diller-Quaile, the Department Coordinator will contact you to schedule a placement interview. At the interview, experienced students may play or sing one of their current pieces. Children new to study will have the opportunity to try an instrument while together we assess their readiness for study. At Diller-Quaile the emphasis is on tailoring programs for each student’s educational needs, from beginning to advanced players.

Step 4: Following the interview, Department Heads will work with your family to plan a program.
